Support a Balanced 2009 Jobs and Transportation Act - HB 2120

You can take action on this alert by reading the information below and following the directions at the bottom.

Issue

The Oregon Jobs and Transportation Act provides critical funding for a range of transportation investments and maintenance. This balanced package will increase transportation choices by shifting federal funds to non-highway transportation projects.

Background

HB 2120 requires all six major metropolitan areas to set their own targets for helping to meet the states global warming goals and provides these fast-growing areas with new planning tools and financial resources for transportation and land use investments that will lead to less global warming pollution.

The Jobs and Transportation Act will be successful in tackling global warming because it requires the six largest metropolitan regions in Oregon (Portland, Salem, Corvallis, Eugene, Medford, and Bend) to plan how they will help achieve the statewide goals for reducing global warming pollution by a specific percentage by 2020, 2030, and 2050.

Local planning will allow each community to determine how it is best suited to meeting the state goals. And reducing global warming pollution will save Oregon households thousands of dollars per year according to a University of Oregon study.

We need to help cities and counties improve their land use and transportation plans to provide Oregonians more choices of where to live and how to get around, including: encouraging mixed-use development; investing in connections like bike paths, sidewalks, and local streets that make biking, walking, and short driving trips more convenient; and making Oregon communities more compact and efficient by limiting outward expansion and sprawl.

Support a Balanced 2009 Jobs and Transportation Act - HB 2120

Dear Representative Bentz,

Please support a balanced 2009 Jobs and Transportation Act (HB 2120) that will provide Oregon jobs, lower transportation costs, and build stronger, healthier communities.

I urge you to make sure HB 2120 provides funding for all transportation options. Any package must ensure adequate funding for greenhouse gas-reducing transit, pedestrian and bicycle facilities.

Oregon must adopt and apply a greenhouse gas reduction planning tool for transportation and land use decision making to meet the state's greenhouse gas reduction goals.

Finally, this package should help cities and counties improve their land use and transportation plans to provide Oregonians more choices of where to live and how to get around.

When taken together, these steps will meet the needs of Oregon families who struggle cover transportation costs, address the challenges of global warming pollution from cars and trucks, and help boost the state and local economy.
